What is Kicking Gas?

Kicking Gas is a grassroots, Whidbey Island-based climate organization working to make home electrification accessible and affordable across the Puget Sound area. Their program helps households currently heated by propane, wood, oil, or gas make the switch to efficient electric heat pumps, with real financial support to make it happen.

They’re not a utility company or a government program. They’re a community-driven non-profit backed by organizations like Philanthropy Northwest, Washington State University, and Snohomish County. Their mission is climate action at the neighborhood level, and they’ve built a program that actually makes it doable for everyday families.

How Much Can You Save?

Subsidies are based on household income and size. Here’s how it breaks down:

Income Level (AMI)SubsidyMax Rebate
80% AMI and below75% offUp to $10,000
80% to 150% AMI20% to 50% offUp to $7,500

Do I Qualify? Eligibility is based on household size and county. The table below shows the maximum household income to receive a subsidy. Occasional exceptions can be made for higher incomes, so it’s worth asking even if you’re not sure.

# in Household123456
Island County$107,100$122,400$137,700$153,000$165,250$177,500
Snohomish County$154,800$176,900$199,000$221,100$238,800$256,500

Snohomish County thresholds are notably generous. A family of four qualifies with a household income up to $221,100. Most families in the area will qualify.

Other Ways to Save on a Heat Pump in Washington

Even outside the Kicking Gas program, there are incentives available for homeowners making the switch to electric:

  • Utility Rebates: Puget Sound Energy and Snohomish PUD both offer rebates for qualifying heat pump installations.
  • Sales Tax Exemption: Washington State offers a sales tax exemption on certain heat pump equipment.

Cascadia Comfort helps customers identify and stack every available incentive, not just the Kicking Gas subsidy.
